The Third Quarter

Year: 2023
Location: Richmond Oval, SA
Dimensions: From 2.5m H
Materials: Mild steel, 2k paint

Located at Richmond Oval, and commissioned by City of West Torrens, these three sculptures are based around the idea of abstracted playful forms which evoke activity, open play, accuracy and movement. Using colour schemes which connect with diverse sporting codes, the primary block colours and patterns create a unique identity for each form.

The artworks create open ended play experiences that re-frame the traditional stick, bat & ball configurations of sport and play. They promote imaginative and creative play as the openings within the forms provide the capacity for active and passive interaction, including sitting, laying, climbing through and throwing accuracy with ball sports.

Subtle cues within the composition infer game play elements that are not prescriptive. The physical forms hint at human or animal figures to create a sense of familiarity, while leaving the viewer engagement open to interpretation.
